About Our Wisteria

Planted around 1860, the Wisteria Arch is formed by four distinct varieties. According to notes from our Gardener’s Mess Room, three are Japanese (twisting clockwise) and one is Chinese (twisting anti-clockwise). Long after the flowers fade, the August canopy produces velvet seed pods that resemble runner beans.

The Perfect Bloom

Spring brings a wave of 'wisteria hysteria' as visitors try to catch the 'perfect bloom'. Fortunately, our arch offers a naturally staggered display. The sheltered end near the walled garden blooms first, while the exposed end near the 'doughnut' flowers later. This extends the season across a two to three week period, making repeat visits highly rewarding.
