Formal & Kitchen Gardens

Discover the horticultural heart of the estate, where thoughtful planting meets ambitious landscape design.

A Garden of Ambition

The formal gardens unfold as a series of connected rooms, guided by water drawn from the River Lugg. Follow its journey through the 26-meter Dutch Garden canal, over bubbling fountains, and past floating island pavilions.

Pleached lime avenues frame long views, while rose gardens and shifting seasonal borders offer quiet seated corners. It is the kind of thoughtful design that rewards those who pause.

A Living History

Our walled kitchen garden dates back to the 18th century when the Arkwright family lived on the estate. Look closely at the brick walls and you'll spot centuries-old nails, silent markers of its history as the productive heart of the gardens.

Today, it still yields a remarkable harvest with sympathetic companion planting of calendula, cerinthe major, and phacelia, as well as a small orchard of local heritage varieties. In spring, the orchard floor comes alive with over 5,000 narcissus and daffodil bulbs before slowly transitioning into a wildflower meadow.
